Snow packed around the wheel wells does not look urgent when you pull into the garage. Most of it is hidden under the car, and it is still frozen.
Come back later and the water is no longer just under the car. A puddle has spread beside one of the tires, and someone walking into the house has left wet shoe prints behind.
Mopping clears the floor for now. It does nothing about the next snowy drive.
The snow is going to melt once the car sits inside the garage. The nuisance is that the water does not stay where it lands. Even a slight slope in the concrete can carry it beyond the car and into areas that were dry when you parked.
A garage car mat for winter catches the snow, water, mud, and road residue that fall from the vehicle. Its waterproof PVC surface sits beneath the car, with a raised sponge edge around the outside.
That raised edge does the useful work. Water can run off an ordinary flat mat as soon as it reaches the side. On a containment mat, it reaches the edge and stops.
Leave Room Around the Car
The tires are not the only places where snow collects. It also clings inside the wheel wells and underneath the car, so some of the water lands beyond the tires as it melts.
The mat comes in four sizes:
- 7 feet 9 inches by 16 feet
- 7 feet 9 inches by 18 feet
- 8 feet 6 inches by 20 feet
- 8 feet 5 inches by 22 feet
Measure the car from end to end, then check how much clear floor space is available. A pickup or large SUV may need one of the longer versions. The tires can fit on a mat while water from the front or rear of the vehicle still drips beyond it.
Width matters for the same reason. There should be enough mat on both sides to catch water from the wheel wells. It also needs to allow for small differences in where the car stops each day. A mat that works only when the tires land in exactly the same place is too small for normal use.
The Puddle Still Has to Go Somewhere
This is a containment mat, not a garage drain. After a snowy drive, the water remains under the car until someone removes it.
A floor squeegee comes with the mat. It can gather the water and dirty residue in one spot instead of pushing it across the rest of the garage. The PVC surface can also be washed when mud and road salt collect on it.
The mat includes adhesive tape and preparation pads to help keep it in place. Positioning matters because the raised edge only works when the dripping parts of the car remain inside it.
There may still be a dirty puddle waiting under the car the next morning. What should be missing is the trail across the garage floor and the wet shoe prints leading into the house.
