The first black mark doesn’t usually seem important because it wipes away in a few seconds. After you’ve cleaned the same spot a few more times, though, it becomes obvious that the chair is reaching the wall every day and leaving another mark behind.
You lean back to think, push away from the desk, or shift your position without paying much attention to it. Before long, the chair is resting against the wall again.
The same thing happens the next day, and before long the black mark always seems to come back in exactly the same place.
Stop the Chair Before It Reaches the Wall
If the chair always reaches the same spot, you only need to protect that one area. A self-adhesive wall bumper gives the chair somewhere else to come to rest before it reaches the paint. After a while, you stop finding fresh chair marks on the wall every time you move the chair to vacuum around the desk.
If the chair only leaves marks, keeping it from touching the wall may solve the problem. A chair that bumps the wall with some force is different. In that case, a thicker bumper gives the chair a softer place to stop before it reaches the paint.
Protect the Wall When the Chair Always Reaches It
Some desks simply don’t leave enough room to keep the chair away from the wall. If moving the desk isn’t practical, protecting the wall is usually the better approach.
This also works better when the chair does not touch exactly the same point every time. Instead of trying to stop one part of the chair, you protect the section of wall where the marks keep appearing.
A clear wall protection film covers the area where the chair keeps making contact. The chair still reaches the same spot, but the wall no longer takes the wear. After a while, you notice the wall isn’t picking up another black mark every time the chair reaches it.
If the whole desk area feels cramped in general, more desk space can make it easier to keep everything within reach without feeling boxed in.
