No Room for a Regular Trash Can? Try a Narrow One in the Bathroom

A bathroom can have enough floor space for a trash can and still have nowhere sensible to put one. Beside the toilet or at the end of a vanity, a regular wastebasket can stick too far into the room.

In a tight spot like this, capacity is not the first measurement to check. Width matters more.

A narrow bathroom trash can can use a strip of floor that a wider bin cannot. This one is just 5.9 inches wide, so it can sit close to a wall or cabinet without taking as much space from the surrounding floor.

Small Enough to Fit, but Still Easy to Use

A slimmer bin is not much help if using it becomes awkward. This one has a foot pedal, so the lid opens without having to pull the can out from its spot or lift the lid by hand. The lid also closes softly.

On a smooth bathroom floor, you may also need to stop the trash can from sliding backward when you press the pedal.

It holds 1.6 gallons, and the inner bucket lifts out for emptying. Standard 1.5- to 1.6-gallon trash bags fit inside.

The smaller capacity is the tradeoff. It will need emptying more often than a larger bathroom bin. When the available gap is narrow, though, a smaller bin that stays out of the way can make more sense than extra capacity.

Measure the Gap Before You Buy

Measure the actual spot where the trash can will sit, not just the bathroom itself.

This one measures 11.2 inches long, 5.9 inches wide, and 11.2 inches high. The narrow width may fit beside a vanity or toilet, but the full length and height still need to work in that particular space. Leave enough clearance above it for the lid to open as well.

If the lack of space extends to the vanity, keeping the bathroom counter clear can free up another part of the room without adding more furniture.

Compared with a wider bin, a narrow bathroom trash can leaves more of the surrounding floor clear. In a tight bathroom, that can be the difference between a trash can that fits neatly into the available gap and one that is constantly in the way.
