Where to Put a Drink When the Coffee Table Isn’t Close Enough

The coffee table is close enough until you actually want another sip. Then you are leaning forward again, or lowering the mug to the floor and hoping nobody gets up. A wide couch arm starts to look surprisingly useful at that point, right up until the mug wobbles.
A C-shaped side table brings the table surface to the couch instead. The base slips underneath while the top sits beside or partly over the seat. Your drink ends up close enough to put down without getting halfway off the couch first.
That only works if the base can actually get underneath. A low couch may leave too little clearance. A deep baseboard or another obstruction can also prevent the table from sliding as close as expected. A table stranded several inches away rather defeats the point.
The shape also helps when an ordinary end table would narrow the route past the couch. Most of the base disappears underneath, leaving more of the floor beside the seat open.
When the Couch Arm Is the Better Option
Some couches leave almost no useful floor space beside them. A clip-on bamboo couch tray avoids the floor completely and turns the arm into a small flat surface.
Here, the couch matters more than the tray. A reasonably firm arm gives it something stable to sit on. A very rounded or heavily padded arm may leave the tray rocking along with the mug. That is not much of an improvement over balancing the drink directly on the upholstery.
Neither option needs to hold half the living room. A mug, phone and perhaps a small plate are usually the things looking for somewhere nearby. If drinks also leave rings on a wooden table, a clear table protector can protect the surface without hiding the wood.
With a small surface beside the seat, the mug can finally stay within reach. You put it down, pick it up again and carry on watching television without rearranging yourself around the coffee table.
