A coffee mug does not need much room until the desk is already full. Leave it beside the mouse and an elbow keeps passing it. Push it behind the keyboard and the mug is out of the way, but every sip means reaching around whatever else has settled there.
A nearby table would solve that nicely. Many small home-office setups do not have one, which leaves the mug migrating from one patch of desk to another.
A clamp-on desk cup holder moves it just beyond the edge instead. The coffee stays close, but the bottom of the mug is no longer occupying the same surface as the keyboard and mouse.
There is enough depth here for a larger drink, but coffee mugs bring their own complication. The body may fit inside a round holder while the handle does not. This one leaves an opening at the side, so the handle can stick out rather than balancing awkwardly against the rim.
Look Under the Desk Before Choosing a Spot
From above, a free stretch along the edge can look perfect. Underneath may be a drawer, support rail, or frame exactly where the clamp needs to sit.
The screw clamp needs a flat, solid place to grip. Buyer feedback on this holder is mixed on that point. Some report that it stays firmly in place, while others have had trouble getting a tight fit on their particular table or desk.
That makes the underside more useful to inspect than another inch of empty space on top. A clear edge also gives you some choice about where the mug ends up once you sit down.
Directly beside the chair may put it against an armrest. Farther forward can put it near a knee. Too far toward the back and the mug is technically off the desk but irritating to reach. A comfortable spot is usually somewhere the hand can find without the chair finding it first.
On a cramped setup, freeing the desktop can also leave more room for raising a monitor that sits too low instead of making the mug and monitor compete for the same limited surface.
The holder itself still takes up space, only now that space is beside and below the desk. With the clamp clear of the frame and the cup out of the chair’s path, the mug can sit a few inches from the mouse without sitting next to it.
