How to Stop Food and Crumbs from Falling Between the Stove and Counter

Crumbs beside the stove have a habit of disappearing before you get around to wiping them up. A few bits of chopped food or seasoning land near the edge, then the next movement across the counter sends them into the narrow gap beside the stove.
Once crumbs fall into that narrow space, wiping the counter does not get rid of them. Some can be reached with a thin cloth. Others fall farther down beside the stove and stay there until you eventually move it.
Cleaning the gap deals with the crumbs after they have fallen. It makes more sense to stop them from getting down there in the first place.
Stop Crumbs Before They Reach the Gap
A stove gap cover sits across the opening between the stove and counter. Crumbs and small drips that would have disappeared down the side stay near the cooking surface instead, where they can be wiped up normally.
Trying to catch every crumb before it reaches the gap is harder than taking away the opening it can fall through. You are still going to scatter the occasional bit of food while chopping, stirring, or moving a pan. The useful change is that those small messes no longer have an easy route into a space that is difficult to clean.
Measure the Gap Before Covering It
The space beside a stove can look narrow without actually being suitable for every gap cover. This one is intended for gaps from 2 to 17 mm wide and extends from 13.8 to 27.5 inches long.
Measure the opening rather than judging it by eye. The cover also needs reasonably flat adjoining surfaces so it can sit properly across the gap. If the stove and counter meet at different heights or the opening falls outside the stated range, this type of cover may not sit securely enough to do its job.
With a suitable fit, the change is easy to see the next time you cook. The crumbs still happen, but they stay at counter level instead of collecting somewhere you have to pull the stove out to reach.
